A Plant Bare Root Planting Guide

Many plants are available to the home gardener generally from January through March at your local nursery. These plants include fruit, flowering, and shade trees, shrubs, grapes, cane berries, strawberries, rhubarb. asparagus, horseradish, leeks and onions.
Bare root plants are young, dormant, deciduous plants that are sold without any soil surrounding the roots. This allows for easy handling and transportation of the plants. In addition, this permits easy placement and establishment of the plant roots of into the native soil of your garden and/or landscape.

Keeping Roots Moist:
It is essential that the roots of bare root plants be kept moist until planting. Place your bare root plants into a plastic bag for the ride home. Once home, prepare the planting hole and soak the bare root plants for one or two hours before planting.
If it is not possible to plant immediately, remove the plants fron the plastic bag and "heel-in" by temporarily planting the bare roots into moist sawdust. soil or aged bark, and water well. Bare root plants may be held this way for several weeks, but should be planted in their permanent location before their buds swell and growth begins.
Remenber to keep-in plants moist.

Select a location that meets the plant's needs for light, soil moisture and drainage. And that the location meet your landscaping and/or gardening plan.
